We’ve been spoiled with all of our modern kitchen gadgetry. There are so many things that can be made significantly easier and faster, but other times kitchen gadgets are just useless. Here are the nine things you definitely don’t need in your kitchen.
Did you know they make a pickle picker, specifically for fishing pickles out of the jar? Probably not, because all along you’ve just been using your fork. Never fear – your fork is more than good enough for getting pickles, and you’re not missing anything by not owning a pickle spear.
Don’t know quite how much pasta to make for dinner? You could use a pasta measurer to help you figure it out, or you could just do it the old fashioned way and eye it out. A pasta measurer is the kind of gadget that will get left in your drawer because using it is more of a hassle than a help.
If you’re an avid wine drinker, you know the importance of letting your wine breathe. It definitely makes a difference in the taste, but you don’t need a wine aerator to help you out. You can keep using your decanter, and know it works just as well.
There is a little device that helps you spread butter on your corn, and it’s supposed to make the process less messy and more efficient. Really it just creates more work and another thing to clean after the barbecue, so stick to using your knife. A knife works just fine, really.
Baby Food Maker
If you puree your own baby food, that’s great, but don’t get tricked into thinking you need a special gadget to do it. Baby food makers are nothing but blenders and food processors in disguise, with some fancy marketing. Your blender is likely to puree baby food better anyway.
Maybe you cook a lot of pizzas, but what’s wrong with your normal oven? Buying a pizza oven to sit on your countertop and bake your pizza is a useless investment. In all likelihood, you wouldn’t use it more than a handful of times throughout the year anyway, if at all.
Ice Cream Scoop
Ice cream scoops do work, but they’re more of a novelty item than anything truly useful. I’m assuming you don’t have any industrial-size ice cream tubs in your home, so your regular kitchen spoon will work just fine for getting the ice cream out of the pint in your freezer.
When you’re making a salad and washing off the lettuce and vegetables, it does make everything pretty wet. But in most cases, rinsing the stuff in a strainer and transferring it to a bowl isn’t going to give you too soggy of a salad. Salad spinners are quite useless.
For some people, baking bread is something they do on a regular basis. For most of us, we’ve only made bread in our dreams. A bread maker is the expensive wedding gift that will probably never come out of its box, so whatever you do, don’t put one on your registry.
