Has your home been broken into multiple times? If your home has been broken into multiple times then chances are that you want to install security doors to improve security. However, while security doors look like a good idea at first glance the fact is that they are way too expensive for most people. There are a few simple ways for you to easily improve your security, limiting the chances of a break in and all without having to spend a fortune.
Change the type of door you have
The first thing that you may think of when you consider the security of your home is the front door. Secure doors have a solid core, and are not hollow like regular doors. However, if you are not sure about what door you have simply knock on it. Solid doors will have a “dead” sound while hollow doors will have an echo. In order to improve the securities of your door just replace all your hollow doors with one that is made from fiberglass, metal, or sold wood. Wood is the least preferable as they can be easily kicked in. That said all of these security doors are very expensive. You’ll also need reinforced heavy duty hinges to support the weight of the door.
Change the locks
Make sure that the exterior door has a dead bolt lock. Even though the twist knob locks with a knob are secure but these shouldn’t be your only line of defense. A dead bolt that has a one inch “throw bolt” will add extra security. You may also consider installing a dead lock or even an “exit only type dead bolt”. These do not have a keyhole on the other side (outside) so they cannot be picked by intruders.
Make sure to reinforce all your existing locks
A good way to improve security is to reinforce all the existing locks on the doors. Check the cylinder guards around your locks to make sure they are tight as they prevent intruders from prying into loose places to open out the lock. Also install strike plates, use screws that are long enough so that they reach the door’s studs and not only the frame. This will add more security to the door in the event of any type of attack. This happens to be the cheapest way to improve door security.
Install a wide angle peephole
Most criminals will knock on the door or ring the bell after which they will enter into the home forcibly after you open the door. When peepholes are installed you can see who is on the other end making it difficult for them to con you. Installing a wide angle peephole allows you to see more so you know if there is more than one person hiding around waiting for you to open the door.
Install sliding and back doors
You need to install the same type of security on your backdoors as you do on your front doors. These include strike plates, locks, and sturdy doors. That said many homes have a sliding door on the back which means that installing a dead bolt or a strike plate here is very difficult. The best way to secure a sliding door is to have key locks installed on the bottom and top of the door. You can also purchase or cut your own metal rod that will fit within the door’s rack preventing anyone from sliding it open.
Turn the lights on
While this it is not a major improvement to your home’s security it does help to deter most criminals. If you don’t already then add a porch light right on top of the entry way. A standard outside light can be used which you leave on at night or you can also invest in a more expensive motion detection light. Motion detection light ranges from $25 to $100 mainly depending on brightness and construction. This is an excellent deterrent because thieves like to enter your home in the dark so the light will scare them away.
The simple tips above will help you improve your door’s security a great deal. However, if you still experience a break-in then invest in high quality security doors.
