Autumn seems to be here this year before summer has even shown its face. Regardless, the time has now come to prepare for the colder months and ensure your lawn is in the best shape it can be in order to survive the winter. This time of year is the traditional time to get outside and carry out lawn maintenance, and as the summer has been rather eventful weather wise, turf and grass has certainly had a chance to actively grow with plenty of rain and sunshine.
Lawn care is important at this time of year and starting off is easy. If your lawn seems a bit spongy, then you probably have an issue with moss. Moss spreads quickly in damp and shaded areas and can overwhelm the grass. The problem needs to be tackled to keep it in check. You can remove moss from your lawn quite easily in two steps. Firstly, spread granules or soak the affected area with a liquid moss killer. You can apply this with a watering can. Leave this for a couple of weeks until it turns black. Once the moss is black; it’s dead and can be removed. You can do this by raking vigorously with a garden rake. If you find any patches of soil left behind, then these will need to be re-sown.
You can reduce the chance of the areas becoming affected again by tackling the cause. If there is anything shading the lawn, like branches for example, removing them will help. This type of lawn care will make a difference next year.
If you’ve made the most out of your lawn when the sun has been out this year, then your lawn could be compacted. If this happens, it can lead to issues with drainage. This can result in moss and puddles lying on the surface of the lawn. You can practice lawn care and improve drainage so you don’t have a mess to deal with next year. Plunge a garden fork into the garden as far as you can. Do this every 10cm and fill the holes you have made with ready mix sand, which you can get from the garden centre.
An autumn feed is great for lawn care and ensuring your lawn is going to survive the winter months. Feeds are high in phosphates and potassium, which will ensure healthy root growth and encourage the grass to be the best throughout the next few months. There are many different feeds, which are specifically designed for different times of year and conditions, so be sure to use one that is designed for autumn. You can order this online if you choose and save venturing outside until you are ready to begin work on the garden!
Make sure your lawn thrives through this though time and see the benefits when the spring arrives. The sun hasn’t shown its face much this year, but there’s always next year, so make sure your lawn is looking top-notch ready for the occasion.
