When it comes to contemporary bathroom design ideas there are an unlimited number of bathroom suites, accessories and colour schemes available to us. However, it can sometimes be difficult to come up with that striking feature that sets our bathroom apart from the rest. Here are five useful ideas that you could use in your bathroom, or which at the least might get you some creative inspiration!
That sunken feeling
Many homeowners will spend a lot of time, effort and money looking for bathtubs that are a little out of the norm. Popular choices tend to be L-shaped tubs or perhaps units that incorporate Jacuzzi style capabilities. However, it is possible to achieve a fantastic look with even the most basic of bathtubs by simply sinking it into the floor. For bathrooms that are based on the ground floor, this process is quite simple. However, if you are considering installing a sunken bath upstairs then you may have to fit a false floor first. Whilst this will of course increase the cost of the project; the look can be well worth the extra expense. In addition, the fact that only the rim and inside of the bath can be seen means that you don’t have to worry about changing the tub in line with any future décor updates.
A recent trend has seen a move away from rigid shower enclosures. Wet rooms have become more popular as we have seen more homeowners opting for open shower spaces. If you have a large enough bathroom, then you should consider fitting a double shower, complete with body sprays. One way to really make a feature of your double shower is to fit a patrician wall; splitting a section of the room in two. One side of the wall can act as a boundary to the shower, with the other side housing the sink and a nice wall mirror. By leaving a few feet at the end of the patrician wall and the boundary wall, you can create two entrances into the shower area, which maintains an open feel and offers practicality when two people are using the shower.
If you are looking to create prominent sink area then a beautiful mirror is a must. A nice vanity unit is also a great way of accentuating the basin, whilst providing you with some useful storage space. If you are looking to go that step further then perhaps installing twin sinks is the answer? Some suppliers offer island style double vanity units that are designed to be situated in the middle of the bathroom. Positioning the sinks in this less conventional way will certainly create an unusual aesthetic in your bathroom and can actually serve to optimise available room space.
One of the key rules in creating a contemporary bathroom design is to minimise the amount of clutter in the bathroom and to have nice clean surfaces. Whilst this is a great idea in theory; in practice it can be difficult to find enough space to store all of those towels and toiletries out of the way. This problem can be solved by opting for vanity wall, which incorporates a number of cupboards, drawers and also the sink – all situated across one wall. Positioning all the storage units in one area frees up the rest of the bathroom and offers the choice of having one or two walls decorated with some unobtrusive wall art.
Back to the future
Our final suggestion is perhaps a little bit unusual, but do hear us out. In older properties it is not unusual to find fireplaces installed within the bathroom. As home heating has improved, largely thanks to central heating, these fireplaces have been removed and disguised. However, having a fireplace in your bathroom can add a little warmth and character to the room. That said, going for a modern electric fire probably makes more sense than the traditional coal or wood burner, which can cause a bit of mess!
