Many of us are beer drinkers and we usually stock up on beer at home. The fact is, we are not the only ones who can appreciate beer. Beer can also be used as an earth-friendly pest control alternative, or as effective household cleaners. So, if you have a few bottles of beer at home, and stressing about a pest problem, put a bit of beer to use. You do not have to invest in expensive and harmful chemicals, nor hunt around for effective eco-friendly pest control methods. You do not have to keep on purchasing various household cleaners as well. The solution to your dilemma is chilling inside your fridge. However, if your pest problem has gotten out of hand, you may want to consult with a professional before your family's health is affected.
Reviving Wooden Furniture
Wooden furniture tends to lose its polish and color after some time. The fumes of wood polish can be harmful to children and pets, and anyone can accidentally stain their clothes with wood polish. A safe way to bring your wood furniture back to life is by gently rubbing flat beer on the furniture with a soft cloth.
Getting Rid of Mice
Mice are a serious pest problem at home. You can effectively get rid of them by getting a cat for a pet. However, you can also trap them and humanely get rid of them, by using beer as bait. All you need to do is pour some beer into a pail, and place a piece of wood leaning against the pail like a ramp. The mice will immediately smell the beer and crawl up the piece of wood, then fall into the pail. You can then take the pail and dump the contents outside, away from your house.
Set a Cockroach Trap
Cockroaches are another annoying pest and they can quickly spread germs around the house. There is an array of cockroach sprays being sold over the counter, but they can be harmful especially when you have pets and children in the house. As such, you can trap them instead by placing a slice of beer-soaked bread inside a jam jar and then coat the lip of the jar with Vaseline. The cockroaches will be attracted to the beer and enter the jar; however, the Vaseline coating will prevent them from escaping the jar.
If you want to get rid of cockroaches by their number, you can have a rag soaked in beer placed out overnight. The cockroaches will be attracted to the rag and swarm. When morning arrives, these cockroaches will not be able to escape because of the beer they had consumed. Just bag up the rag and kill any cockroaches that will try to get away, and then dispose them.
Cleaning and Polishing Gold and Brass
You can clean your gold jewelry by using beer as a gold cleaning liquid. Place your jewelry in a dish of beer and allow it to soak. Then rinse it and gently polish using a dry soft cloth.
If you want to polish brass pots and décor, you can dip a soft cloth into beer and gently rub the object. Then let it sit for some time, before rinsing and drying with a soft cloth.
Trapping Fruit Flies
Fruit flies are attracted to fermented food and drinks. So, you can leave a glass of beer or a beer can on the kitchen counter as bait. But, be sure to place a sheet of paper or plastic over the top and poke a few small holes in them. The fruit flies will be able to get into the holes, but will not be able to get out. After being able to trap a number of fruit flies, you can dispose of the beer and fruit flies altogether.
Repel Earwigs and Slugs
Earwigs and Slugs can severely damage plants and using harmful chemicals in your garden can be dangerous. Fortunately, you can use stale beer to get rid of these garden pests. All you need to do is place a dish of stale beer on the ground and let the earwigs and slugs crawl in. They will drown in the beer and you can get rid of the pests.
