Did you ever know that:
- The flushing toilet was invented by Thomas Crapper?
- On an average, a person visits toilet 2500 times in a year and spends almost two to three years of his whole life in a toilet?
- November 19th is declared as a World Toilet Day?
- Average life expectancy of any toilet is 50 years?
Well… there are plenty of fun facts, about the room, that could be discussed in-detail. However, a toilet is also a place that offers refuge from stress - in fact, many people brainstorm in a toilet! What else? A recent survey has proved that approximately 63% of mobile phone users make phone calls from toilet.
Often called by several names like a garderobe, lavatory, water closet or dunny (an Australian slang), a toilet is not thought over too much (usually). During renovating or re-designing our homes we tend to ignore the fact that toilets (too) are going to be visited by guests somehow - often, more importance is given to living rooms, bed rooms or dining rooms.
But, this may not help otherwise. You may need to design a stylish toilet because it is one of the rooms in which you will be spending a lot of time, every day. It is one of the rooms that, if well-designed, will help you at receiving compliments from guests.
So, what can be done to become a proud owner of stylishly designed toilet?
Start with selecting a unique theme that may provide your toilet a trendy look and feel. Be more imaginative and creative in order to make it match your individual style statements. For instance, a floral theme will brighten up the entire place whereas a classic style decor will add sophistication to the toilet. The modern toilet, on the other hand, will exhibit a simple yet elegant look.
After a theme has been decided, start with selecting colours. Colours do affect the mood and they are associated with certain emotions. Thus, you will have to be very cautious whilst making a choice: choose amongst monochromatic, analogous, complementary or triadic colour schemes. For smaller washrooms, go for light, pastel colours or accentuate the walls with faux painting techniques.
Next is lighting - It has to be as stylish and decorative as any other thing in the toilet. Pleasant light bulbs, designer globes or shades enhance the overall interiors of the room. Remember correct lighting can actually dramatise the overall appearance of the room and thus has to be chosen with care.
The last step is to shop for complementary knick knacks! All the accessories including brightly coloured mat, landscape or abstract paintings, scented candles and thick, fluffy towels (to be hung beside the wash basin) can be chosen in sync with the design theme. Attractive artificial hanging baskets can also be hung on to the window panes to accentuate the decorations.
